NEWS We had an awesome pie auction in St George. If you bring a pie, it will be auctioned. So it is written..... Fred Eaglesmith is home from his solo tour in The Netherlands where Jessi opened the shows!!!! The next show is a band show on December 9th at The Red Dog in Peterborough, Ontario, and then on the 9th, at the Aylmer Town Hall on the 10th of December. It has been so long since I've done one of these updates, I don't even know where to begin, and I can't even imagine how much I am about to leave out! To start, everything is awesome! We have 6 Volts with us on the road and online - and it's really good! People are telling me all the time at the merch table that they love it, and everything I read online says the same, so it's really fun for me to get to sell that one, and be lucky enough to have gotten to play on it! Fred writes great songs, true! The road... We are a travelling show, and the make up changes all the time! We get to a venue, by bus, or van and RV. We do sound check, sometimes Bill Poss opens the shows, (soon to be Jessi as well I am sure!), and maybe The Fabulous Ginn Sisters will play next, and it's always Fred! We have had a lot of our own Backroad shows all over Ontario, we've gone across Canada and back (more than once) , tours in the US, Fred and Jessi did a solo tour of The Netherlands. The Band has become a set of Useful Tools and we even did a mini Bill Poss CD release tour of "Hay" the solo album Fred produced. Which is also awesomely addictive! We've had a bus break down, lost the handle off the side door of the van, had burning brakes, Blue got a haircut, Fred won a summer long contest he was having with Bill, all the girls have started running, Matty skips like the dickens, Brit keeps making little hats, Tif can't keep up with the Guitar Charm demand. I am pretty sure Justine might have finally settled on a hairstyle/color, and the Red Elvis (Mike Zinger) still gets razzed by Fred to get a haircut, and the chicks out of his room. We have a Tin Can tour (Route 66) planned, the Winter Weekend is scheduled, it's New Years Eve at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI again this year, and there are a lot of shows before, between and after..... I'm pretty sure all the links you will need are on this page somewhere! I am not sure how much sense this will make to y'all, but if you have ever been to a Fred Show, I am sure you can figure it out! Ha! See you soon. Please read this article. here. 6 VOLT REVIEW Fred Eaglesmith: Dangerous to Himself Written By: William Michael Smith, Houston Press 2012 TIN CAN CARAVAN!! Find out where else on the schedule... ![]() The Sound and Art of Fred Eaglesmith Fred Eaglesmith will be bringing his Travelling Show to the Fergus Grand Theatre on Saturday, June 4 and the Fergus Arts Council want to make sure that everyone comes to both see and hear all that this Canadian music legend has to offer. It was the idea of Arts Council Member Peter Mandic, a devoted fan and self-proclaimed “Fredhead”, to curate a one-night art show of Eaglesmith’s art in the Grand Theatre’s lobby to coincide with the concert. Eaglesmith, readily agreed and was happy to offer The Arts Council a portion of art sales to help fund various projects including The Riverwalk Festival at the end of June. Eaglesmith, a consummate professional on the stage with his 30 year, 18 album, 250 shows-per-year musical career, is a self-declared amateur on canvas. His art, like his music is inspired by his upbringing in the small rural Ontario village of Castor Centre and the adventures he has had on the road since he left that place at the age of 15. His visual creativity unfolds with long brush strokes and bright colours while working fast and intuitively. “My paintings are accidents- if I try to manipulate them they almost never work out. If I let them take their own shape, then even I am surprised by the result.” Says Eaglesmith, “I’ve been a very careful songwriter but now I know that I can throw it together and manipulate what happens. I am learning from my painting that I can go with my first instinct.” Eaglesmith’s artistic instinct has gained him widespread recognition. An appearance on David Letterman and songs covered by Miranda Lambert and Alan Jackson are just a few of his current successes. But to him the greatest success is being able to play in front of a few hundred people, close to home and share a bit of his creativity with everyone, whether through his music or his art. We have been looking for Fred Fans to sponsor children through the World Vision program for the past 3 years or so, so far there have been more than 275 childrens lives changed! If you come to a Canadian Fred show please think about taking a child home you didn't come with! Here is a letter we received from an awesome young Fred Fan! We just saw her and her brother Wilson with their parents at the show in Sebringville this weekend! Dear Fred, My name is Laine and I just turned 7. I went to see your show in Hamilton last fall. While we were there, you told us about World Vision. My parents sponsored a girl my age from Brazil named Kuane. After that, they went to your show in Waterloo and sponsored another child. This time it was a boy named Muh from Indonesia that is the same age as my brother. I just had my birthday party, and I asked my friends to bring a donation to World Vision instead of a present for me. Some of them still brought little presents, but we raised $200 for World Vision. With the $200 we were able to send a special gift to each of our sponsored children's communities and to stock a medical clinic with supplies (from the World Vision Gift Catalogue). If you didn't have the World Vision kids at your show none of this would have happened. Thanks! For my birthday my family gave me an i-pod, I already have 5 Fred CD's on it. My favorite songs are Alcohol & Pills, Time to get a gun and Bell. Yours Truly, Laine & Wilson Stratford, Ontario P.S. Say Hello to Kori for me! We would like to thank everyone who brought under garments to the April shows that we will be sending to girls and women in Haiti as part of an ongoing drive. We are still collecting them so if you are coming to a Fred show, please bring some ladies or girls underwear with you! They'll tell me, 'We knew you first!' In Canada, they'll say, 'You're not getting too big for us now, are you?' But Americans are always excited for you to do well. But yeah, I'm getting calls from some of the heavy hitters in Nashville who want me to come write with them. They're so confused about the state of country music these days, and I'm so whacked out that I'm like, 'This is fun!' Country is just in such a conundrum that they're grasping at straws. Quotable Country 01.03.11 Edition Country California Posted by C.M. Wilcox I'm a marginal dude. I'm 53 years old, I'm not married, I don't live in suburbia — I live in an old Masonic Lodge that I bought and turned into a living space and music studio. I don't sit on the patio, or go to hockey games, or veg out and watch TV with my girlfriend. Most guys my age don't live like I do. They're worried about if they can afford a new car this year, or how much they have in their retirement account. I often ask people, "What do you do after 5 o'clock, after you get home from work?" I'm fascinated by how they live, because my own life is just different. Fred Eaglesmith explains why he tends to write about marginal characters. How nice is that?? Fred fans are a unique bunch. They are friendly, caring, compassionate, generous people who love music, adventure, love to have fun, and let's be honest, we are all a bit nuts!! I think it is true that all the members of the band, past and present, have unique relationships with each one of you, and the main thing we all have in common is Fred! Recently, we have been hearing about all different kinds of health problems, and tragedies in the lives of a lot of our friends that we meet on the road, and take home with us in one way or another. Because of our relationships with all of you, it is very sad when we hear that someone has passed away, or has an illness that they need to battle to overcome. So I guess what I am saying is that I personally am praying in my own way for every one of the people I meet on the road with Fred Eaglesmith to have the strength to get through whatever obstacle life is throwing at them at this time. And because I know what great fans Fred has, and what great friendships a lot of Fred fans have with each other, I guess I am asking you to say a prayer, send out some good energy, or whatever you might call it - to anyone who needs it this holiday season and all year round. And if you happen to be one of the people who need it, please open your heart to all the love, prayers, and positive energy we are sending out to you. Believe that it is for you. It is. Here is an excerpt from a letter I received today from Dave Toycen of World Vision: "As I try to move through the debris-filled streets of Port-au-Prince, I'm horrified to see that so many children are on their own, frightened and hungry, unable to find their parents. Your donation right now will help save these children's lives by providing Emergency Kits to keep them well: $110 to supply 2 desperate families with Emergency Kits $220 so 4 Emergency Kits will go to 4 families in need $550 means 10 Emergency Kits for 10 families It's critical that we keep distributing these Emergency Kits, which contain items like blankets, hygiene supplies, cooking sets and other essentials, to those who are most in need. Remember, when you donate to help these children and families by February 12th, your gift will double in impact due to a generous contribution from the Canadian Government. World Vision is here in Haiti for the long term - we're going to continue to help rebuild and restore the lives of those affected by this terrible earthquake. Thank you for helping. Please keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts and prayers." Here is the link!!!! WORLD VISION First and foremost HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!!!!!! I just got back from doing some rock-hounding, and thought I would sit down to give you a really quick low down of what's been going on. I am calling this the stormy tour. We have been caught in a lot of storms, the biggest I would say was in Nanton, Alberta (thanks Barb and Larry!), the power went out during the show, Fred grabbed the acoustic guitar, did one song, said it was in his contract that if the power went out, he got to go for a nap, and the power instantly went back on!! (at least where we were it did!!) I have to add the Dauphin Country music fest (in Manitoba) had a huge hail storm - it left piles of hail that looked like snow - I saw many a snow man in July!!! We celebrated both Fred and Matty's birthdays on this tour. We saw a few moose on our way - and got some pictures of them so I will post those soon! The shows have been super fun and if they weren't all sold out - they sure were close - so that's awesome too!! We are going to be seeing lots of old friends this weekend, like Hank and the boys, Roger and the boys - Hayes and the boys and girl - and the Ginn Sisters will be singing with the band this weekend (and some other shows too) so that totally rocks!! Donnie Courvilles' mom gave me this link to see a bit of the devastation that hurricane Ike left behind. Here. We are still in Texas for a bit and on our way up through the US. Come find us!!
The Fred Eaglesmith South West Steam train is a blast! We trekked up the mountain in Silverton to see Jesus again this year! It's Tuesday, we are in Pagosa Springs, and the sound guy just smacked up his truck on the way to the gig, so Luke and Matty just went to get him and his gear so we can put on a show!! We are about an hour behind schedule right now, so I am doing this to kill some time! I am sure it will all work out, it always does - and I am sure the show will be great! Po Girl is playing before us, and their show in Silverton the other night was awesome, so how could it not turn out awesome again tonight?? That's how it goes being on the road! Life is great! Tonight here, and tomorrow night in Chama!! Get here if you can! If not, check the schedule to get to a show you can make it to... Find all the shows for the tour and visit t |
